Now would be a wise time to invest stock in Hot Topic. The news that Sony is remaking “The Craft,” the 1996 supernatural thriller about badass teen witches with angst and attitude to spare pretty much guarantees that black miniskirts, knee-high socks, chokers and crucifixes will see a resurgence in popularity. Alternateens — and former alternateens — this calls for a celebration.
According to Variety, Leigh Janiak (“Honeymoon”) will direct and co-write the remake. The original “Craft” focused on a new high school student (Fairuza Balk) who is recruited by three fellow students (and aspiring witches) who see potential in their classmate and welcome her into their coven. What begins innocently enough quickly enters much darker territory involving bullying, murder and mayhem.
“The Craft” performed well at the box office, grossing $55 million worldwide on a $15 million budget, and this is to say nothing of its beloved reputation as classic sleepover fare.
