“Stargirl” is getting a second season — and a new home. According to Variety, the story of Courtney Whitmore, aka Stargirl, will move to The CW from the streamer DC Universe (DCU) for Season 2.
Currently in its first season, “Stargirl” premieres new episodes on DCU on Mondays and airs them again on The CW on Tuesdays. “With the renewal, The CW and its digital platforms will be the exclusive in-season home of the series starting with its second season. Season 2 will not stream on the show’s original home at DC Universe,” the source explains.
“Stargirl” is based on Geoff Johns’ DC comic book characters, whom he created “as a tribute to his sister.” The show sees Courtney (Brec Bassinger) moving to Blue Valley, Nebraska, when her mother remarries. In her new town, she leads a group of young superheroes and takes on villains from the past. Amy Smart (“Justified”), Luke Wilson (“Enlightened”), Anjelika Washington (“Tall Girl”), Yvette Monreal (“The Fosters”), and Meg DeLacy (“The Fosters”) also star.
Melissa Carter executive produces and serves as showrunner along with Johns. Sarah Schechter and Greg Berlanti also EP.
“Like other streamers, DCU does not release viewership numbers. On CW, the show has done well, particularly for a summer series. To date, it has averaged a 0.2 rating in adults 18-49 and just over 1 million viewers per episode in the Nielsen Live+Same Day ratings,” Variety notes. “That is on par with other DC superhero shows that aired on CW during the regular season. In Live+3, the show rises to a 0.4 and 1.5 million viewers.”
When “Stargirl” makes its move to The CW, it will be joining a slew of other superhero stories, including the female-driven “Supergirl” and “Batwoman.” “Harley Quinn,” which follows the titular DC villainess, is among DCU’s offerings.
