“Stargirl” Sequel in the Works at Disney+, Julia Hart to Reprise Directing Duties

"Stargirl"

We haven’t heard the last of Stargirl Caraway’s songs: Disney+ is prepping a “Stargirl” sequel. Released in 2020 and based on the best-selling YA book of the same name, “Stargirl” stars Grace VanderWaal (“Music”) as a ukulele-playing, nonconforming highschooler who helps a withdrawn new kid (Graham Verchere) mourning the loss of his father come out of his shell. VanderWaal will reprise her role in the sequel, and the original pic’s director, Julia Hart, is also returning. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.

The sequel, written by Hart and Jordan Horowitz, follows “Stargirl’s journey out of Mica and into a bigger world of music, dreams, and possibility.”

Hart’s latest film, Rachel Brosnahan-starrer “I’m Your Woman,” opened AFI Fest 2020 and premiered on Amazon Prime in December. Her other features include “Fast Color” and “Miss Stevens.”

“Tell female stories,” Hart urged when we asked her advice for other women directors. “I don’t know, maybe I’m not supposed to say that, but if we don’t, who will? Some of my favorite female characters were written by men. I’m not saying men can’t [write women]. I’m just saying, they’ve got men covered. They’ve got them covered in spades. So let’s tell a few stories about women while we’re here.”
