Starz Plans Sequel to Philippa Gregory Historical Drama ‘The White Queen’

“The White Queen,” Starz’s Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated adaptation of the first in Philippa Gregory’s Cousins’ War book series, is getting a sequel.

“The White Princess” is based on the book series’ fifth installment of the same name. It is set during the War of the Roses and, as with the other Cousins’ War stories, the era is viewed through the eyes of a female protagonist — in this case Elizabeth of York, wife of Henry VII and mother of Henry VIII.

Gregory will once again serve as an executive producer to the Company Pictures project. “The White Queen” writer Emma Frost (“The Man in the High Castle,” “Jamaica Inn”) returns as showrunner and will also exec produce.

Starz’s first Gregory adaptation helped to secure a record number of award nominations for the network back in 2013.

“There is a dearth of programming that tells women’s stories and ‘The White Queen’ was embraced with great success by audiences worldwide,” said Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik. “The passionate fanbase for Philippa Gregory’s historical novels [is] undeniable, and we are confident ‘The White Princess’ will become the next must-see fandom drama series.”

“The White Princess” will comprise of a limited run of eight episodes, and is currently in preproduction. No word yet on casting.
