The Emmy-winning stunt coordinator behind Zoya the Destroyer and Liberty Belle’s epic battles in the ring is stepping behind the camera. “GLOW’s” Shauna Duggins is set to make her directorial debut with “Guardian,” Variety confirms. Voltage Pictures and Wonderland Sound are producing the action pic.
“Guardian” sees an assassin becoming “the reluctant guardian for the son of the last man he killed – entangling himself in a mob power struggle and an unexpected crisis of conscience,” the source summarizes.
Duggins made history as the first female stunt professional to win an Emmy when she took home the honor in 2018 for her work on Netflix wrestling dramedy “GLOW.” “Supergirl,” “Alias,” and “Charlie’s Angels” are among her other credits.
Asked about the biggest misconception about her work as a stunt double and stunt coordinator, Duggins said, “I think the first thing they always say is, ‘Oh wow, you’re a woman.’ There are very few stuntwomen that are coordinators. There are a few of us, and they’re great at their jobs, but it’s just now in the last few years happening more and more. I think with ‘GLOW’ they’re not as surprised [but] with ‘Ray Donovan’ almost every director was surprised. It’s such a male-dominated show. But I was proud of the fact that they watch the action and they watch Liev [Schreiber] who’s so tall and strong and such an amazing actor, and Jon Voight and all of the amazing actors who crush it every week. And to have a director say that, it doesn’t bother me. We can do it all, too.”
