It’s no secret that Cannes Film Festival would benefit from being more diverse and inclusive. Scheduled to be held May 20, the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase is dedicated to “ensuring globally diverse filmmakers and their stories are seen and heard at the world’s most prestigious film festival.” Submissions are now open for the independent event produced as a component of Diversity Day at the Cannes Film Festival. The final submission deadline is March 29, 2019.
The showcase offers a platform for participating filmmakers to “expand their international network and to strategize to finance, produce, and distribute their films. Since not all films are selected for the official Cannes Film Festival, think of Diversity in Cannes as an independent helpmate to the larger festival providing programming for a portion of the underserved population. Similar to Slamdance at Sundance,” a press release detailing the event explains.
