The Athena IRIS Screenwriting Lab is accepting scripts for its 2019 edition. If you’re a female-identifying writer with a feature-length screenplay centering on at least one woman in a leadership role, then this workshop is for you. Scripts can be submitted now through November 7, 2018.
The Lab is a two-day script development intensive that will take place February 28 and March 1, 2019, during the 9th Annual Athena Film Festival. Designed for women screenwriters who have not yet had a feature-length script, pilot, or teleplay produced, the Lab is also a chance for participants to receive seasoned mentorship.
Eight writers will be accepted to the 2019 Lab. Scripts penned by more than one writer will be considered, but each member of the writing team must identify as female. The scripts themselves must not exceed 120 pages. The Lab is looking for projects from all genres about women from all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural groups. Scripts already submitted to the Athena List will not be considered.
The 2018 Lab’s participants were Joy Goodwin (“Run”), Kellee Terrell (“Gemma”), Elizabeth Richardson (“A Forest Without Hours”), and G. Michelle Robinson (“Placage”). Shari Springer Berman (“Cinema Verite”), Sabrina Dhawan (“Monsoon Wedding”), Maria Maggenti (“Before I Fall”), and Michael Arndt (“Little Miss Sunshine”) served as mentors last year.
You can submit your script via FilmFreeway through November 7. Applicants will be notified by January 16, 2019. Go to the lab’s website for more information.
The 2019 Athena Film Fest runs February 28-March 3 at Barnard College in NYC.
