“The Miseducation of Cameron Post” co-writer and director Desiree Akhavan has a TV series on the way. Titled “The Bisexual,” her first project on the small screen sees her writing, directing, and starring in a comedy that “explores the differences between dating men and women from the perspective of a person who finds herself doing both,” according to a press release that announced the news. The six -part series is set to stream on Hulu in the U.S. and will air on Channel 4 in the UK.
“The Bisexual” follows New Yorker Leila (Akhavan), who is feeling lost in London after her 10-year relationship with her girlfriend and business partner (Maxine Peake) comes to an end. Forced to move out of their shared apartment, Leila decides to rent a room from a neurotic novelist (Brian Gleeson) who ends up serving as a wingman for her.
“Taking a candid look at the way people have sex and what that sex reveals about their prejudices however ‘woke’ they think they are, ‘The Bisexual’ is a raw, funny, and unapologetic take on the ‘last taboo’ — bisexuality — and the prejudices, shame, and comic misconceptions that surround it,” the press release promises.
Akhavan is co-writing the series with frequent collaborator Cecilia Frugiuele, who co-penned and produced “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and also produced Akhavan’s feature directorial debut, “Appropriate Behavior.” The former stars Chloë Grace Moretz as a teen who is sent to a gay conversion camp. The pic took home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year.
“I was raised on film and television, it was a third parent to me,” Akhavan said while accepting the honor. “But I grew up always wishing that that parent resembled me a little bit more, and I’m hoping that with this film we made something that speaks to the people you don’t usually hear about onscreen.”
Released in 2015, “Appropriate Behavior” is a semi-autobiographical comedy that sees Akhavan playing a Brooklynite struggling to come out to her Iranian family.
No word on when to expect “The Bisexual.”
