Sundance Women Producers: Meet Naomi Scott — ‘The Overnight’

Naomi Scott is a London-born writer and producer. Her previous credits include The Greatest Event in Television History, The Andy Milonakis Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Scott produced The Overnight, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival on January 23.

W&H: Please give us your description of the film playing.

NS: In an attempt to acclimate to Los Angeles, a young couple spends an increasingly strange evening with the parents of their son’s new friend. The Overnight is a funny, sometimes dark, and always interesting look at modern marriage.

W&H: What drew you to this story?

NS: The premise made me laugh out loud, but Patrick Brice’s script drew me into the complexity of the characters and what leads them to do unexpected things.

W&H: What was the biggest challenge in making the film?

NS: Our shoot was 90% night shoots! As the 1st AD, I had to make sure we made each of those nights to accommodate our schedule, and it was insane. And then, just when you think you can’t pull one more all-nighter, it’s over!

W&H: What do you want people to think about when they are leaving the theatre?

NS: What kind of underwear will you wear to your next dinner party.

W&H: What advice do you have for other female producers?

NS: Trust your instincts and don’t worry about what people will think. If you find yourself in the gender minority, consider it a positive when your opinion differs from others’. I lean into unusual ways of solving problems. Also, when it’s your turn to crew up, consider women at all levels.

W&H: What’s the biggest misconception about you and your work?

NS: That it’s not creative. Putting out fires one after another while pretending everything’s fine is super-creative. By the way, I’m not sure who’s misconceiving this, but clearly I’m sensitive about it!

W&H: Name your favorite woman-directed film and why.

NS: Enough Said, Please Give — Nicole Holofcener speaks to me and creates characters that make me think, I know her!

Jill Soloway’s Afternoon Delight and the film-like Transparent — stories of imperfect women who make questionable choices make me deliriously happy.

Nora Ephron — I could quote every one of her movies!
