Susan Sarandon Takes on Politics in New TV Series ‘Graves’

Susan Sarandon’s career has spanned over 40 years, but she’s never been a series regular on a television series — until now. Sarandon has appeared in shows like “The Big C,” “30 Rock” and “Rescue Me” — and is a four time Emmy nominee — but her role in “Graves,” a new half-hour comedy series from Epix, will mark her first time starring in the medium.

The Academy Award winner will play former First Lady Margaret Graves. According to Deadline, Margaret “decides to follow her own political ambitions just as her husband [played by Nick Nolte] embarks on a Don Quixote-like journey to right the wrongs of his administration two decades after leaving office.”

Many have speculated that Elizabeth McCord, the lead character on “Madam Secretary,” is a fictionalized version of Hillary Clinton — a theory our TV critic Sara Stewart shot down in her review of the CBS series. It seems all but inevitable that Margaret Graves will meet similar comparisons. We care less about the links between these fictional characters and Clinton and more about women with political aspirations being featured onscreen. Research from the Geena Davis Institute reveals that only 10% of politicians in films are portrayed by women. So regardless of who Margaret may be based on, we’re glad that she’s going to be part of the TV landscape.

Expect production to begin on “Graves” this fall and for the show to debut fall 2016.
