Hedy Lamarr is getting the doc treatment from executive producer Susan Sarandon and director Alexandra Dean, and it’s no wonder given Lamarr’s legendary careers — yes, plural — as both a Hollywood actress and genius inventor. Lamarr, the first woman to simulate an orgasm on-screen in a theatrically released film, made history off-screen as well: without her contributions, we wouldn’t have Wi-Fi.
In addition to her remarkable professional life, Lamarr’s personal life is noteworthy, to say the least: when her businessman husband began dealing weapons to Nazis, the Jewish-born actress fled him and Austria in the middle of the night. She took a boat to America and negotiated a contract at MGM.
Sarandon and Reframed Pictures are teaming up with American Masters and Submarine on the doc, tentatively titled “Hedy: The Untold Story of Actress and Inventor Hedy Lamarr.” The film will make its U.S. broadcast premiere on the “American Masters” series on PBS.
“This is the story of a Hollywood actress, defined by her appearance, who is secretly a brilliant inventor and changes the course of history,” said Sarandon.
