Svetlana Cvetko to Direct “One Nation Under Earl,” Shining a Light on Immigrant Stories

Cvetko

Svetlana Cvetko has lined up her next feature. She will follow up “Show Me What You Got,” a romance about three boundary-breaking Millennials released earlier this year, with “One Nation Under Earl,” per Deadline. The Oakhurst Entertainment pic is based on a true story.

The film will “detail the rise and fall of Earl David, a young Brooklyn attorney who committed major immigration fraud in the U.S. Using an encyclopedic knowledge of the U.S. immigration system, David amassed a fortune and outsmarted the FBI to give tens of thousands of immigrants a shot at the American Dream,” the source summarizes.

“Whether considered a hero or a villain, Earl David created opportunities for many immigrants who went on to play a vital role in American culture,” said Cvetko, who the source notes is an expat of the former Yugoslavia. “Immigrant stories are a part of the fabric of the American quilt, and I’m excited to shine a spotlight on that,” she emphasized.

Also a cinematographer, Cvetko’s DP credits include “Inside Job,” an Oscar-nominated doc about the 2008 financial meltdown, and “Red Army,” a look inside the Soviet Union national ice hockey team during the Cold War.

“The best advice I’ve ever received came from an elderly taxi driver,” Cvetko told us. “I was going to a large event where I was one of the featured speakers, and the driver could tell I was nervous. I explained to him why, and he smiled and said, ‘That’s so easy. They have you up there because you’re you. Just be yourself. Nothing to worry about.’ Those words still guide me on a daily basis.”
