SyFy Orders “Vagrant Queen,” A Space Opera with All-Women Writers and Directors

Adriyan Rae will star: Stephanie Girard/IMDb

Syfy’s next series will follow in the footsteps of “Harlots” and “Queen Sugar,” shows that boast all-women creative teams and directing rosters, respectively. Comic adaptation “Vagrant Queen” will be written and directed entirely by women, Deadline reveals. Jem Garrard (“Android Employed”) serves as creator and showrunner, and “Light as a Feather” actress Adriyan Rae will star. The show is based on the Vault Comics series of the same name by Magdalene Visaggio and Jason Smith.

Described as a “fun, violent, snarky space opera,” “Vagrant Queen” follows child queen-turned-isolated orphan Elida (Rae), who is on the run from the government trying to kill her, thereby eradicating her bloodline. “When her old friend Isaac shows up claiming her mother, Xevelyn, is still alive, they head off with their new ally, Amae, to stage a rescue that will take her back into the perilous heart of her former kingdom and up against a deadly foe from her childhood, Commander Lazaro.”

Principal photography on “Vagrant Queen” will kick off in July in Cape Town, South Africa. The one-hour show has received a 10-episode order, and will be broadcast on Syfy in 2020.

To date, the creative team includes writers Mika Collins (“Deep Six”) and Mariko Tamaki (“Skim”) and directors Garrard and Danishka Esterhazy (“Banana Splits”).

“You Me Her,” “Mech-X4,” and “Playground” are among Garrard’s previous writing and directing credits.

Rae is currently filming Season 2 of Hulu’s teen thriller “Light as a Feather.” She has appeared in “Atlanta,” “Star,” and “Brockmire.”
