Buzzfeed’s Alison Willmore has published a great new quiz on women directors that extends all the way back to 19th-century film pioneer Alice Guy-Blache’s The Cabbage Fairy, includes midcentury classics like Agnes Varda’s Cleo from 5 to 7 and Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid’s Meshes of the Afternoon, and encompasses contemporary touchstones like Jane Campion’s The Piano, Mary Harron’s American Psycho, Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank, and Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz.
The best thing about sifting through a list of 176 women-directed movies is seeing the enormous variety of genres, styles, sensibilities and backgrounds represented: low-brow comedies, high-brow dramas, art films, rom coms, action spectacles, animated movies, and all manner of documentaries.
The quiz is far from comprehensive of women’s directorial work over the past 130 years of cinematic history, but it’s a good overview of female achievements in film, as well as a fun way to test your knowledge of women directors’ accomplishments.
Take the quiz.
