Abbi Jacobson puts down the bong and picks up a bat in “A League of Their Own.” The “Broad City” alumna created and stars in the fresh take on Penny Marshall’s beloved 1992 film about the first female professional baseball league. There’s no crying in baseball, but we’re sure some happy tears celebrating the release of a teaser for the Prime Video series can be excused.
Though it features no dialogue, the spot shows the women at the center of the show in the locker room, out on the field, and making their mark on the wider world. It also hints at a potential romance on the team between Jacobson’s character and D’Arcy Carden’s (“The Good Place”) if their intense eye contact is any indication.
Other cast members include Chanté Adams (“Voyagers”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“The Power”), and Melanie Field (“Heathers”). Rosie O’Donnell, who starred in the original pic, will guest star.
The series’ synopsis promises that it “[widens] the lens [of the film] to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball,” offering a “deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their own paths towards the field, both in the League and outside of it.”
“A League of Their Own” hits Prime Video August 12. Jamie Babbit (“But I’m a Cheerleader”) helmed the pilot.
