A new teaser trailer for “Queen Sugar,” the highly-anticipated new series from Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network, has just hit the web, and it’s making us here at Women and Hollywood even more excited for a project we were already incredibly excited for.
According to the description from Shadow and Act, “Queen Sugar” “chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings — Nova (Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) — who come together after a family tragedy to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.”
The series also stars Tina Lifford, Dondré Whitfield, Timon Kyle Durrett, Nicholas L. Ashe, Bianca Lawson, Greg Vaughan, and Henry G. Sanders. The series is based on a novel by writer Natalie Baszile.
DuVernay wrote and directed the pilot, and will direct multiple first season episodes. She’ll hand-pick the rest of the directors. Each episode was directed by a woman, as DuVernay recently celebrated on Twitter:
This! Every QUEEN SUGAR episode is helmed by a bad-ass woman director. Love to my sister shotcallers. And thank you.https://twitter.com/blackfilm/status/745737106992017408 …

DuVernay was the first black woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes for her film “Selma.” She was notoriously snubbed for an Oscar nomination, but DuVernay’s career is already history-making and will no doubt continue to break ceilings and bust molds.
The teaser doesn't give away much, but it is heart-pounding, exciting, and looks amazing. “Queen Sugar” will premiere on OWN in the fall. Check out the electric teaser below.
