“Betty” is back and tackling life in New York City during COVID-19. Set in the late summer and early fall of 2020, the second season of the critically acclaimed HBO series sees Kirt (Nina Moran), Janay (Dede Lovelace), Honeybear (Moonbear), Camille (Rachelle Vinberg), and Indigo (Ajani Russell) working to protect and empower their skateboarding community and dealing with the pandemic.
A new teaser for the season shows the young women skating around the city, making plans to visit a sex shop, and telling off a man who is harassing them. “You sound like a dude who used to be hella ugly and never learned how to speak to women,” Kirt tells an obnoxious heckler at the skate park.
HBO’s synopsis of Season 2 notes that “Betty’s” “five protagonists are stepping firmly into womanhood and tackling all the challenges it brings. As they navigate the pressures of adulthood, their male counterparts start to step up, step in, and become true allies, forming a united front for the greater good.”
“Betty” is based on “Skate Kitchen,” Crystal Moselle’s 2018 Sundance pic inspired by real-life skateboarders she met on the train. Moselle serves as director on the series, which is set to return in June.
