Another addictive mystery is moving from bookshelves to the big screen. Following in the footsteps of page-turners such as “Gone Girl” and “Girl on the Train” is “A Simple Favor,” Darcey Bell’s 2017 debut novel. A teaser has landed for Paul Feig’s take on the thriller with Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively in the lead roles.
“I do consider Emily my best friend,” says Stephanie (Kendrick). “She is this wonderful, elegant person.” Cue glimpses of impossibly glamorous Emily (Lively) beaming with the perfect smile, wearing the perfect clothes, and preparing the perfect martini.
But all is not as it seems. Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding) describes her as an “enigma” and hints that it’s possible to get close to her, “but never quite reach her.” And Stephanie acknowledges that “everybody has a dark side,” but pointedly adds, “some of us are better at hiding it than others.”
It seems that Emily has skeletons in the closet —and when she suddenly disappears, Stephanie and Sean commit to finding her, and the truth.
Last seen in “Pitch Perfect 3,” Kendrick’s upcoming projects include “Noelle,” a fantasy comedy that sees her playing Santa’s daughter, and “Trolls 2.”
“All I See Is You” and “The Shallows” are among Lively’s recent credits. The “Gossip Girl” alumna is signed on to topline another adaptation, “The Husband’s Secret,” based on the book by “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty.
Co-written and directed by Feig, “A Simple Favor” hits theaters September 14. Jessica Sharzer (“American Horror Story,” “Speak”) penned the script with Feig.
