Teaser Watch: Carrie May Have Been Turned in the Final Season of “Homeland”

"Homeland": JoJo Whilden/SHOWTIME

A teaser for “Homeland’s” eighth and final season is here and asks the previously unthinkable question: Has Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) been turned? She’s been subjected to seven months of interrogation and confinement in a Russian gulag, yet doesn’t remember anything about it.

Despite the gaps in her memory, Carrie, CIA loyalist that she is, is sure she never “conspired with a foreign intelligence officer or service” or revealed any asset’s identity. However, her former mentor, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), has his doubts. “Everyone breaks under Russian interrogation,” he says matter-of-factly.

Alongside the mystery of what actually happened to Carrie in Russia, Season 8 of “Homeland” focuses on her latest collaboration with Saul, who is now National Security Advisor to the new president, Ralph Warner (Beau Bridges). “The top priority of Warner’s young administration is an end to the ‘forever war’ in Afghanistan, and Saul has been dispatched to engage the Taliban in peace negotiations,” Deadline details. “But Kabul teems with warlords and mercenaries, zealots and spies – and Saul needs the relationships and expertise that only his protégé can provide. Against medical advice, Saul asks Carrie to walk with him into the lion’s den – one last time.”

Danes won two Emmys for her work in “Homeland,” and has scored another three nominations. The show’s first season picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

“Homeland” returns February 9 on Showtime.
