Queen Elizabeth is armed and dangerous in our first look at “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” “The Crown” star Claire Foy is saying goodbye to Buckingham Palace and following in the footsteps of Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace to play Lisbeth Salander, the brilliant hacker and vigilante at the center of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series.
We don’t hear much from Lisbeth in the teaser, but we hear a lot about her. She’s described as a “righter of wrongs” and “the girl who hurts men who hurt women” by someone in her past — a woman she seems to share a complicated history with. “Do you remember that morning? For 16 years I’ve been watching you. Why did you help everyone but me?” the mystery woman asks Lisbeth. The fact that we see footage of Lisbeth pointing a gun at her suggests that there’s plenty more to the story.
“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” marks the first time David Lagercrantz’s book of the same name has been adapted for the big screen. Rapace starred in Swedish adaptations of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire,” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest.” Mara took on the role of Lisbeth in the English-language version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and earned an Oscar nod for her breakout performance.
Foy has won a Golden Globe and received an Emmy nomination for playing Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” on Netflix. She was last seen in “Unsane,” a thriller about a woman who is involuntarily committed to a mental institution. The pic hit theaters in March.
“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” opens November 9.
