“This is not going to go the way you think,” Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) informs Rey (Daisy Ridley) in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Rey — who is possibly Luke’s daughter — responds by turning her lightsaber on him.
The new teaser for “The Last Jedi” reinforces the ideas from last month’s official trailer. After the events of 2015’s “The Force Awakens,” Rey is in crisis. She’s unsure of herself, her background, and her purpose. She’s separated from her friends Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac). And the only person willing to teach her about her powers is the nefarious Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).
Thankfully hope is not completely lost for Rey. “Darkness rises,” a sinister, disembodied voice announces in the teaser, “and light to meet it.” Rey might be getting in touch with her dark side, but that doesn’t mean she’s definitively turning her back on the light.
Written and directed by Rian Johnson (“Looper”), “The Last Jedi” opens December 15. Laura Dern (“Big Little Lies”), Kelly Marie Tran (“XOXO”), Gwendoline Christie (“Game of Thrones”), Domhnall Gleeson (“Ex Machina”), and Benicio Del Toro (“Sicario”) co-star.
