HBO has unveiled a teaser trailer for “Insecure,” the premium cable network’s eagerly awaited new half-hour comedy series from Issa Rae. The “Awkward Black Girl” YouTube breakout created and stars in “Insecure,” a hilarious look at the relationship between two female friends, and the trials and tribulations they experience alongside one another. “We wanted to depict an authentic black female friendship,” explained Rae at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. She added, “We’re just trying to convey that people of color are relatable.”
The first look at “Insecure” is certainly relatable — painfully so. Rae, playing the role of Issa Dee, psyches herself up in the mirror prior to a night out, dancing, posing, and practicing dialogue. “I just want to be confident,” she explains to her BFF Molly (Yvonne Orji). But it’s hard to be confident when you face stone-cold rejection like Issa does at the club. No amount of mirror prep can save you from that mortification.
Check out the trailer below, which includes a cringe and giggle-inducing confrontation between Issa and Molly regarding insensitive texting.
“Insecure” premieres on HBO October 9.
