“911. What is your emergency?” A new teaser for “Antebellum” kicks off with a terrifying one-sided 911 call. The operator asks if anyone is with the caller and if they can get to a safe area, but is only met with silence. The call is being made in the present, yet we are shown glimpses into the 1800s as well as contemporary society. The camera depicts a single black woman, presumably a slave, fleeing a group of armed white men on a plantation as another woman, played by Janelle Monáe, looks on. We also see Monáe dressed in current fashion having dinner at a restaurant with friends, and walking through an apartment building.
Set to hit theaters April 24, the thriller sees Monáe playing a successful author who seemingly gets transported into the past, where she finds herself a slave. She’s “trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late,” the film’s synopsis hints.
“Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight” are among Monáe’s previous credits. You can catch her in theaters now in “Harriet,” Kasi Lemmons’ biopic of Harriet Tubman. An eight-time Grammy nominee, Monáe’s albums include “The Electric Lady” and “Dirty Computer.”
