Kate Winslet is following up her turn as a fossil hunter searching for relics on the southern coastline in “Ammonite” by playing a small-town Pennsylvania detective searching for clues in “Mare of Easttown.” A trailer just dropped for the HBO limited series, which is described as “an exploration into the dark side of a close community, and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.”
“I can feel it happening again — this expectation from people to be something I don’t think I’m good enough to be,” says Mare (Winslet), who is known around her community as Lady Hawk. The nickname has followed the detective around since she made a shot in a basketball game 25 years ago, cementing her place as a local hero. “Doing something great is overrated because then people expect that from you all the time,” she explains.
When Mare begins investigating a local murder, the town puts pressure on their beloved Lady Hawk to save the day, but her life is crumbling around her. The teaser suggests that she’s struggling to reconcile with past trauma.
Winlset won an Oscar for her leading role in “The Reader” and received nominations for “Steve Jobs,” “Little Children,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Iris,” “Titanic,” and “Sense and Sensibility.” Her upcoming slate includes “Lee,” Ellen Kuras’ biopic of war photographer Lee Israel. The pair previously worked together on “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” which Kuras served as DP on.
“Mare of Easttown” premieres April 18.
