Katie Holmes is stepping behind the camera again. “We’re so conditioned to achieve things and to find the perfect mate — and then the world shuts down. The only thing that matters are essential workers and I’m not essential,” the “Dawson’s Creek” alumna says in a new teaser for “Alone Together.” She toplines the comedy about an ill-fated romantic getaway set during COVID.
June, a food critic, arrives at an AirBnB ahead of her boyfriend, John (Derek Luke, “13 Reasons Why”). She’s shocked to be in the company of another guest, Charlie (Jim Sturgess, “Across the Universe”). The double booking proves to a blessing in disguise when John decides to stay in the city to take care of his parents. Lockdown brings June and Charlie close together — so close that June seems stunned, and possibly even unhappy, when John finally arrives at the rental property.
“I was searching for a way to process all the changes that occurred during the pandemic. I read a lot of stories about people falling in love and falling out of love during the pandemic, and I thought it might make a good film,” Holmes told us in a soon-to-be published interview. “I wanted to create something that captured that time and also offered a bit of hope.”
Holmes made her feature directorial debut with the 2016 mother-daughter drama “All We Had.” The “Batman Begins” actress also previously helmed an episode of “The Kennedys After Camelot,” which saw her starring as Jacqueline Kennedy.
Penned by Holmes, “Alone Together” makes it world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival June 14. It hits theaters July 22 and digital and on demand July 29. Melissa Leo (“The Fighter”) and Zosia Mamet (“The Flight Attendant”) co-star.
