Move over Khaleesi, there’s a new woman warrior harnessing the power of dragons set to hit the screen. A teaser has dropped for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Raya and the Last Dragon,” a fantasy pic that sees “Star Wars'” Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina voicing its titular characters.
“My whole life, I trained to become a guardian of the dragon gem, but this world has changed — and its people are divided. Now, to restore peace, I must find the last dragon,” Raya explains in the spot.
The teaser is sparse on plot details, but the pic’s official synopsis helps fill in the gaps. “Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity,” it teases. “Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world — it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.”
Tran’s recent credits include “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” and “Sorry for Your Loss.”
Awkwafina won a Golden Globe for her leading role in “The Farewell.” She co-created and stars in “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” a Comedy Central series that’s been renewed for a second season.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” hits theaters March 12, 2021.
