Teaser Watch: Octavia Butler’s Sci-Fi Classic “Kindred” Comes to the Screen

"Kindred"

An aspiring writer finds herself at the center of a stranger-than-fiction story in “Kindred,” FX’s long-awaited Octavia Butler adaptation. “I was here, and then suddenly I wasn’t here,” says Dana (newcomer Mallori Johnson) in a new teaser for the sci-fi series. The young Black woman is being pulled back and forth between the present day and Antebellum times.

The spot sees Dana being ripped from her home in LA to a plantation in Maryland, where she’s chased and physically attacked. “I don’t understand what’s happening to me. Am I crazy?” she asks.

“Kindred” was published in 1979.

The recipient of two Nebula awards and two Hugo awards, Butler’s other books include “Parable of the Sower” and “Dawn.”

“Kindred” launches December 13 exclusively on Hulu. “Zola” writer-director Janicza Bravo helmed the pilot.
