Teaser Watch: Patricia Arquette Is One Terrifying Mama in “The Act”

"The Act"

A nightmare-inducing portrait of a toxic relationship between a mother and daughter, Erin Lee Carr’s 2017 HBO true crime documentary “Mommy Dead and Dearest” made a major impression on viewers and critics alike. The stranger than fiction story about the murder of Deedee Blanchard by her daughter Gypsey Rose — and the wild circumstances surrounding the crime — made for a viewing experience equal parts addictive and disturbing. And it looks like Hulu’s take on the story will be too.

A teaser has dropped for “The Act,” an anthology series that tackles a different true crime each season. The first, set to premiere March 20, tells Deedee and Gypsey’s Rose story.

“You are my angel,” Deedee (Patricia Arquette) tells her bed-ridden daughter (Joey King). “My mom is my best friend,” claims Gypsey Rose. “All she wants to do is keep me safe.” But the countless pills Deedee is feeding her suggests otherwise.

Check out the trailer to see the drama unfold. Michelle Dean is showrunning this season of “The Act” alongside Nick Antosca. Christina Choe (“Nancy”) and Hannah Fidell (“The Long Dumb Road”) both directed an ep.

Arquette just snagged a Golden Globe for her performance in HBO limited series “Escape at Dannemora.” She won an Oscar for “Boyhood.” “The Kissing Booth,” “Wish Upon,” and “The Lie” are among King’s recent credits.
