Teaser Watch: The Monterey Five Are Under a Microscope in “Big Little Lies” Season 2

"Big Little Lies"

“We’re kidding ourselves if we think people will stop talking,” says Nicole Kidman in a new teaser for “Big Little Lies'” highly anticipated second season. People haven’t stopped talking about the Emmy-winning HBO hit since its 2017 premiere, and Monterey won’t stop talking about the women who have come to be known as “the Monterey five”: Celeste (Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Shailene Woodley), Renata (Laura Dern), and Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz).

The unlikely allies share a secret they are intent on keeping under wraps: Bonnie pushed Celeste’s abusive husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) to his death. It’s not clear how much the people of Monterey know about the events that transpired in “Big Little Lies'” first season finale, but it is clear that there’s lots of gossip about what went down — enough to make Jane feel like they all “have scarlet letters on [their] backs.”

One person in particular is determined to get to the bottom of what exactly happened at that fateful — and fatal — P.T.A. party: Perry’s mother, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep). “My son is dead. I want to know what happened that night,” she tells Madeline.

“Big Little Lies” will return June 9. Andrea Arnold directed every episode this season.
