Too much media pits women against women, but “GLOW” is one instance where we’re dying to see women square off. The upcoming Netflix dramedy, created by Liz Flahive (“Homeland”) and Carly Mensch (“Nurse Jackie”), centers on female wrestlers. And we can’t wait to watch women duke it out in the squared circle. We finally have our first taste of the series from a newly released teaser announcing its premiere date.
While the spot reveals nothing about “GLOW’s” plot — besides the fact that it will highlight women in the ring — it does set a mood. The spot has a cool aesthetic, largely thanks to glowing pink ropes in the ring, and features only the bodies of the wrestlers, not their faces. Women are shown stretching in the ring, sizing each other up, and getting physical.
“Inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the ’80s, ‘GLOW’ tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling,” Netflix’s official synopsis details. “In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin), a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, coked-up B-movie director who now must lead 14 women on the journey to wrestling stardom.”
“Orange Is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan serves as executive producer alongside Tara Herrmann (“Weeds”), Flahive, and Mensch.
“GLOW” debuts on Netflix June 23, which gives you plenty of time to watch the upcoming fifth season of “Orange Is the New Black” before marathoning another show. New episodes of the prison dramedy will be available on the streaming giant beginning June 9.
