It’s time to reunite with Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, and all your other faves in Stoneybrook. “The Baby-Sitters Club” could be heading back to TV. Deadline reports that a revival series is in the works thanks to Walden Media and Michael De Luca Productions.
Based on Ann M. Martin’s beloved best-selling fiction series, the project will feature all of the characters from the original books. “Storylines of the episodic half-hour will focus on the entrepreneurial girls’ ventures and friendships, maneuvering the launch and success of their business while staving off competition and overcoming various growing pains along the way,” the source details. “Episodes will broach topics from the books such as racism, divorce, and belonging while continuing to push the bar and explore relevant issues facing modern day teens.”
Deadline doesn’t specify whether the new series is set in the present.
Frequent “Broad City” writer and director Lucia Aniello is in talks to sign on as director and executive producer. She made her feature debut with last year’s “Rough Night.” Rachel Shukert (“GLOW,” “Supergirl”) is in talks to serve as showrunner.
“The Baby-Sitters Club” TV series ran for one season on HBO in 1990. The book series also served as the source material for a 1995 film of the same name directed by Melanie Mayron.
“I wouldn’t say that I had a feminist agenda, but I certainly had a feminist perspective,” Martin has said of the book series. “I think of myself as a feminist. I wanted to portray a very diverse group of characters, not only from different racial backgrounds, but from different kinds of family backgrounds, religions, and perspectives on life. I just really wanted a group of girls who were very different from one another and who became very close friends.”
