ARRAY Releasing has snagged worldwide rights to “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open,” a Canadian drama that made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. Deadline broke the news. Founded by “When They See Us” writer, director, and exec producer Ava DuVernay, ARRAY specializes in film and TV by women and people of color.
“The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” is written and directed by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn. The former also stars in the film, which centers on “two Indigenous women living very different lives who are briefly brought together by desperate circumstances.”
“Through emotional, passionate storytelling, ‘The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open’ showcases the rarely portrayed lives, challenges, and perspectives of Indigenous women,” ARRAY president Tilane Jones said. “This beauty of a film by two dynamic women filmmakers captivated everyone at ARRAY. We’re thrilled to share Elle-Máijá and Kathleen’s talents while unveiling ‘The Body’ as our 25th acquisition.”
“The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” debuted at the Berlinale. A release is planned for later this fall.
Tailfeathers’ directing credits include doc “c’sna?m: The city before the city.” Hepburn made her feature debut with 2017’s “Never Steady, Never Still.”
Heidi Saman’s “Namour,” Lisa France’s “Roll with Me,” and DuVernay’s own “Middle of Nowhere” are among ARRAY’s other titles.
