The Culture Wars Are Back: Mike Huckabee Slams Natalie Portman For Being Single and Pregnant

The steam is coming out of my ears.

It’s like deja vu. Twenty years ago we had Dan Quayle going after Candice Bergen on Murphy Brown and now we have Mike Huckabee going after Natalie Portman.

Media Matters for America transcribed an interview between Huckabee and radio talk show host Michael Medved.

Just remember this is a man who wants to be President of the United States of America.

HUCKABEE: You know Michael, one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine.’ But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie. And I think it gives a distorted image that yes, not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.

You know, right now, 75 percent of black kids in this country are born out of wedlock. 61 percent of Hispanic kids — across the board, 41 percent of all live births in America are out of wedlock births. And the cost of that is simply staggering.

There are so many things to say and the first is- Mike — mind your own fucking business. If she had had an abortion then you’d be slamming her for doing that. This is a young, educated woman who, yes, can afford to have a baby, and news flash she does not have to be married to do that. And while we are on marriage, let’s not forget the many gay couples who have kids who want to be married who are denied that right.

If these guys want to stop these “so-called poor, uneducated single women who can’t get a job” not to have children why are you taking away their access to birth control and family planning? You can’t have it both ways.
