“The Good Fight” Renewed for Fifth Season at CBS All Access

“The Good Fight” will continue. Deadline reports the “Good Wife” spinoff has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS All Access. Season 4, now dropping new episodes on Thursdays, will wrap up early, on May 28, due to the coronavirus-related halt in film and TV production.

Created by Michelle King, Robert King, and Phil Alden, the legal drama follows Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) who — after losing her savings in a Ponzi scheme on the eve of her retirement — starts over at predominantly black Chicago law firm. Since its 2017 debut, the series has dealt explicitly with race, feminism, and politics, particularly the Trump administration. Season 4 began with an episode set in an alternative reality where Trump was never elected, Harvey Weinstein never fell from grace, and the #MeToo movement never made an impact on mainstream culture.

This season has seen Diane and her colleagues adjusting to their office’s new status as a subsidiary to a multi-national firm. They’re also looking into the mysterious Memo 618, a communique that enables the rich powerful to defy judicial rulings.

“’The Good Fight’ remains one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed original series on CBS All Access, and we’ve seen a tremendous response from fans this season,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming at the streamer. “While we all had hoped to provide audiences with a 10-episode fourth season, we, among many others, have had to adapt due to the pandemic. Although it’s a shortened season, the incredible cast and crew, helmed by the incomparable Robert and Michelle King, have produced a phenomenal seven episodes. We can’t wait for viewers to see the remainder of the season and are excited to bring subscribers even more of the timely, gripping storylines the Kings bring to life next in season five.”

Michelle and Robert King added, “It’s been weird to not be able to finish the fourth season. It left the story in even more absurd a place than usual. So we’re thrilled that CBS All Access wants to bring ‘The Good Fight’ back for an additional season, and we know what story we’re planning to tell. It’s like getting the answers to the SAT ahead of time.”

The Kings, who created “The Good Wife,” run and exec produce “The Good Fight.” The series’ ensemble cast includes Audra McDonald, Cush Jumbo, and Sarah Steele.
