Tiya Sircar is visiting Netflix from “The Good Place.” The recurring star of the NBC afterlife comedy is set to topline a film for the streamer, Deadline reports. Inspired by Dete Meserve’s mystery book series of the same name, “Good Sam” will be directed by Kate Melville.
The film follows Kate Bradley, a TV news reporter assigned with uncovering the identity of an anonymous Good Samaritan — AKA Good Sam — who has been leaving $100,000 cash gifts on seemingly random people’s doorsteps in New York City. “As interest in the extraordinary gifts sweeps across the country, Kate seeks to unravel the identity of Good Sam and the powerful and unexpected reasons behind the extraordinary gifts,” the source summarizes.
Meserve and Teena Booth (“Marrying Mr. Darcy,” “Reviving Ophelia”) are writing the script.
Sircar’s other credits include “Alex, Inc.,” “Master of None,” and “The Internship.” She also voiced a character in “Star Wars Rebels,” an animated series. “I didn’t see superhero characters who looked like me when I was growing up, so if I can contribute to changing, in some small way, for younger people now, that’s hugely important to me,” she’s said. “Representation is so important.”
Melville made her directorial debut with 2012 Tatiana Maslany-starrer “Picture Day,” a coming-of-age story about a rebellious teen. Also a writer, she’s penned episodes of “Orphan Black” and “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” among other series.
