‘The Good Wife’ Creators Sell Drama About Female Papal Spokesperson to Amazon

Michelle King and Robert King, the wife-husband writing partners that created “The Good Wife,” have sold “Vatican City,” a new drama, to Amazon.

“Vatican City” centers on an American abroad: a female onscreen-reporter who works in Rome at a financial news network. She finds an unlikely admirer who radically changes her career trajectory — the pope. After catching the attention of the liberal pope, Clement, she is recruited as the papal spokesperson in Vatican City, a title previously held exclusively by men. (The series is fictional, but women are predictably underrepresented in the real Vatican — in 2014, 82% of the Vatican staff was male.)

Deadline reports, “Once there, she’s forced to navigate 2000 years of sexism and a boss who 1.2 billion people consider infallible.”

Michelle and Robert King will pen the script for “Vatican City,” in addition to taking on executive producing duties through their company King Size Prods. The president of King Size Prods., Liz Glotzer, will also EP. (So will Ridley Scott and David Zucker.)

This is the second upcoming television series set in Vatican City that we’re keeping our eyes on. Back in July it was announced that Diane Keaton will portray sister Mary, an American nun living in Vatican City, in an eight-episode series produced by HBO, Sky and Canal Plus. “The Young Pope” will focus on a fictional U.S.-born Pope, Pontificate of Pius XIII — AKA Lenny Belardo (Jude Law). Sister Mary helps raise Lenny and influences him from behind the cloistered walls of the Vatican.
