A premiere date has finally been set for “The Good Fight,” the hotly anticipated “Good Wife” spinoff. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the legal drama will debut on CBS and CBS All Access, the network’s VOD site, on February 19. The following week, “The Good Fight” will begin streaming solely on CBS All Access.
Having the show premiere on both platforms will no doubt bolster “The Good Fight’s” buzz and lead to more viewers checking it out on CBS All Access. “Good Wife” fans will also be drawn in by familiar faces: Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo are reprising their roles as Diane Lockhart and Lucca Quinn.
“The Good Fight” was created by the same minds behind “The Good Wife,” Michelle and Robert King. The wife and husband duo will serve as showrunners on the new series.
“CBS All Access has built tremendous momentum in the past year — passing one million subscribers, launching our first original with ‘Big Brother: Over the Top’ and, most recently, bringing live NFL on CBS programming to the service,” said CBS Interactive president Marc DeBevoise. “We’re continuing this momentum with the upcoming launch of ‘The Good Fight,’ which promises to not only deliver more ambitious premium programming for our subscribers but an opportunity for world-class creators like Robert and Michelle King to push the envelope in new ways.”
“The Good Fight” marks the first original scripted drama to launch on CBS All Access. According to THR, the series “picks up a year after the events of ‘The Good Wife’” and “centers on an enormous financial scam that has destroyed the reputation of a young lawyer, Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), while simultaneously wiping out her mentor and godmother Diane Lockhart’s (Baranski) savings. Forced out of Lockhart & Lee, they join Lucca Quinn (Jumbo) at one of Chicago’s preeminent law firms.”
“The Good Wife” starred Julianna Margulies and aired on CBS from 2009 to May of this year. The drama ran for seven seasons and won five Emmy Awards.
“We could have made Diane a bitch but we respected her too much for that,” Michelle King has said of Baranski’s character. “It’s a cliché about women not being generous to each other. Alicia (Margulies) did become a better lawyer and Diane did see that.” King revealed that she accesses her “inner Diane” during negotiations. We look forward to seeing Diane’s arc continue on “The Good Fight.”
