“The L Word: Generation Q” and “Work in Progress” Renewed at Showtime

"Work in Progress": Showtime

Two series about the lives and loves of queer women are getting second seasons at Showtime. Variety confirms that the cabler has renewed both “The L Word: Generation Q” and “Work in Progress” for 10-episode sophomore seasons. The two series premiered last month.

“Generation Q” is a revival of the groundbreaking “L Word,” which ran from 2004-2009 on Showtime. Like its predecessor, “Generation Q” follows a close-knit group of lesbians in Los Angeles. Marja-Lewis Ryan showruns the series and executive produces alongside original series creator Ilene Chaiken. Stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig, and Leisha Hailey — who also toplined the original “L Word” — are among the EPs, too, as are Kristen Campo and Allyce Ozarski.

In addition to Beals, Moennig, and Hailey, “Generation Q’s” ensemble cast features Arienne Mandi, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, Sepideh Moafi, and Leo Sheng.

“’The L Word: Generation Q’ took our original series that was revered and reinvigorated it for a new generation and a new era,” said Gary Levine, co-president of entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. “The result has been a show that appeals to all generations for its relevance, its fearlessness, its emotion, and its fun. I can’t wait to see what Marja, along with Ilene and this talented ensemble, will deliver for Season 2.”

“The L Word: Generation Q,” which has strived to be more inclusive and sensitive — especially in regards to its trans characters — than its predecessor, will air its first season finale January 26.

Created by star Abby McEnany and Tim Mason, “Work in Progress” follows a suicidal self-described “fat, queer dyke” (McEnany) as she embarks on an uplifting, life-transforming new relationship with a young trans man (Theo Germaine). Karin Anglin, Celeste Pechous, and Julia Sweeney also star.

McEnany, Mason, and Lilly Wachowski serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.

“We could not be more gratified that both critics and viewers are responding to the spark of creativity and original point of view that blew us away when we first saw the pilot that screened at Sundance last year,” stated Jana Winograde, co-president of entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. “We fell in love with Abby at first sight, and are eager to share in the laughter — and tears — that she, Tim, and Lilly will undoubtedly evoke in Season 2.”

Season 1 of “Work in Progress” will also conclude January 26.
