“The Lost Daughter” continues to gain momentum as awards season heats up. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut scored the most wins at last night’s Gotham Awards, receiving honors for best feature, breakthrough director, best screenplay, and outstanding lead performance for Olivia Colman.
Penned by Gyllenhaal and based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, “The Lost Daughter” is a psychological drama that tells the story of a professor on vacation and the mother and daughter she meets on a beach, an encounter that leads her to reflect on her early days of motherhood. The film premiered at Venice Film Festival, where Gyllenhaal won the award for best screenplay.
Also among the winners at this year’s Gothams was “CODA’s” Emilia Jones, who took home a statuette for Breakthrough Performer for her leading role in Siân Heder’s Sundance winner. The coming-of-age pic tells the story of an aspiring singer who is the only hearing member of a Deaf family.
