The Majority of NewFest LGBTQ+ Film Fest’s 2020 Lineup Is Directed by Women & Non-Binary Filmmakers

"Ammonite": See-Saw Films

NewFest has unveiled the lineup for its 32nd edition. A press release from the New York-based LGBTQ+ film and media organization and film fest announced that 63 percent of films set to screen this year are directed by women and non-binary filmmakers, and 76 percent of content is about and/or by underrepresented voices, defined as “women, people of color, trans, bi, and differently abled.” More than 120 titles are included in the program.

Set to take place October 16-27, NewFest will kick off with “Ammonite,” a period romance starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. Other features at the fest include Rivkah Beth Medow and Jen Rainin’s “Ahead of the Curve” and Anna Kerigan’s “Cowboys.” The former is a doc about Curve Magazine, a trailblazing lesbian publication, and the latter is drama exploring the dynamic between conservative families and transgender kids.

“With the Presidential election right around the corner and a Supreme Court seat now open, it is more urgent than ever that queer stories be told and celebrated,” said Executive Director David Hatkoff. “We have created an 11-day event that will meet and speak to this moment, delivering a thought-provoking, inspiring, and joyful look at the LGBTQ community and the unique challenges it faces, while also paying homage to the incredible queer legacy that exists in NYC. We can’t wait for audiences around the country to view these incredible films, and hopefully be inspired to raise their own voices in pride and protest on November 3rd and beyond.”

This year marks the first-ever virtual edition of NewFest. The fest will also include drive-in screenings. Head over to NewFest’s website to check out the complete lineup.
