The Orchard has secured all North American rights to Antonio Campos’s “Christine.” The film, which stars Rebecca Hall in the titular role, is based on the story of television reporter Christine Chubbuck who tragically took her own life live on air in 1974.
“Christine” has become one of the most talked-about films to premiere at Sundance this year, where it received rave reviews. Critics singled out Hall’s portrayal of Chubbuck in particular. The Orchard intends to give the film a traditional theatrical release later in the year, followed by an awards campaign, the focal point of which will be Hall’s performance.
The film traces Chubbuck’s life and the events leading up to her death, painting a portrait of an ambitious career woman committed to serious issue-based journalism, who is increasingly at odds with her ratings-chasing employers and their demands for ever-more exploitative stories.
“’Christine’ is one of the most enthralling and compelling films we saw at Sundance and Rebecca Hall’s performance is simply mesmerizing,” said Paul Davidson, The Orchard’s senior VP for Film and Television.
Hall can currently be seen in theaters in Tumbledown, written by Desi Van Til.
