“The Power of the Dog” and “CODA” Among the Films Up for PGA Awards’ Top Honor

"CODA"

“The Power of the Dog” and “CODA” are one step closer to becoming Best Picture contenders at this year’s Academy Awards. Nominations for the PGA Awards are in, and both titles are in the running for the night’s top honor, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which has long been seen as a predictor for the Best Picture noms at the Oscars.

Both films made a major splash on the festival circuit. “The Power of the Dog,” Jane Campion’s first feature in over a decade, premiered at Venice Film Festival, where she took home the Silver Lion for Best Director. Sian Heder’s “CODA” made history as the first film to sweep the top U.S. Dramatic Prizes at Sundance Film Festival.

Campion and Heder penned the scripts for their respective films.

Set in the 1920s, “The Power of the Dog” is a Western-inspired psychodrama about two Montana ranchers and their relationships with a local widow and her son.

“CODA” marks Heder’s second feature and tells the story of an aspiring singer, a teen girl who is also the only hearing member in a Deaf family.

Campion is on the producing team for “The Power of the Dog.” In 1994 she landed an Oscar nod for directing “The Piano,” and won an Oscar for writing its screenplay. Her other credits include “Top of the Lake,” “Bright Star,” and “Holy Smoke!”

Heder made her feature debut with 2016 Elliot Page-starrer “Tallulah.” She’s also directed episodes of “Little America,” “Orange Is the New Black,” and “Men of a Certain Age.”

The PGA Awards will take place March 19. Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” landed the top prize last year, and went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The DGA Awards just announced their TV nominees. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Lorene Scafaria, and Lucia Aniello are among the directors up for honors this year.
