Tanya Seghatchian has been named head of this year’s BFI London Film Festival’s official competition jury. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Power of the Dog” producer will lead a jury that also includes “Game of Thrones” alumna Gwendoline Christie.
Written and directed by Jane Campion, who took home the Oscar for best director, “The Power of the Dog” tells the story of Montana ranchers. The period pic won a slew of honors last awards season, including a BAFTA for best film. While accepting the honor, Seghatchian acknowledged Campion’s impact on the industry. “You’ve inspired legions of women to find their voices. We’re here because of you,” she emphasized.
Seghatchian’s other credits include Best Picture Oscar nominee “Cold War,” installments of the “Harry Potter” franchise, and “The Crown.”
“I’m looking forward to getting to work with my fellow jurors,” said Seghatchian. “It’s both a privilege and a luxury to be able to spend time viewing such an eclectic and visionary group of films. This is a particularly uncertain time for independent cinema, so it’s more important than ever to have a U.K. festival like the LFF there to celebrate the very best work from filmmakers around the world.”
Set to run October 5-16 in cinemas around the U.K. and October 14-23 on BFI Player, this year’s program includes Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking,” a drama about sexual abuse that’s set in a remote religious community, and Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny,” a supernatural story that follows an undocumented Senegalese nanny living in New York.
