We haven’t seen the last of the Defoe family — it’s not as though they’ll ever run out of divorce cases to process. BBC One has renewed “The Split” for a second season, Deadline confirms. The legal drama about divorce lawyers just started airing in the U.S. last week on SundanceTV.
Created by “Suffragette” and “The Iron Lady” screenwriter Abi Morgan, the London-set series follows the Defoe family, most of whom work in divorce law. The cast includes Nicola Walker (“Spooks”), Fiona Button (“Lip Service”), Annabel Scholey (“Being Human”), Deborah Findlay (“Collateral”), Anthony Head (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), and Stephen Mangan (“Episodes”).
“I’ve been very proud to see Nicola Walker leading our incredible cast through six episodes of Abi Morgan’s beautifully crafted exploration of families and modern marriage, and I am thrilled that we’re going to be able to continue to explore their lives in even more detail in a second series,” said Sister Pictures’ Jane Featherstone. The show marks the company’s first commission. Featherstone hinted, “Expect things to get even messier for the Defoe sisters and those closest to them.”
“It’s a delight and a privilege to bring ‘The Split’ back for series two and to submerge myself once more into the world of Noble, Hale and Defoe and the lives of Hannah and her sisters,” added Morgan. “Thank you to the BBC and the enthusiasm of viewers and we look forward to seeing you in 2019.”
Morgan received Emmy nods for her writing on BBC America miniseries “The Hour,” an espionage drama set during the Cold War. She’s signed on to adapt Christine Mangan’s “Tangerine” for the big screen. Set in 1950s Morocco, the psychological thriller centers on former roommates with a complicated history. Morgan also has a series in development about Cleopatra for which she plans to hire an all-female writing team.
