Thembi Banks will direct Cardi B in her first starring role. The pair are teaming up for “Assisted Living,” a Paramount Players comedy that will see Grammy winner Cardi B taking the lead after supporting turns in “Hustlers” and “F9: The Fast Saga.” Deadline broke the news.
“Assisted Living” sees Amber (Cardi B), a “small time crook,” in “over her head when a heist goes wrong. On the run from both the cops and her former crew, she struggles to find anyone to take her in. Running out of options, Amber disguises herself as an elderly woman and hides out in the one place no one will look — her estranged grandmother’s nursing home,” the source summarizes.
Paramount snagged rights to the original spec, penned by Kay Oyegun (“This Is Us”), in 2019.
Cardi B won best album at the 2018 Grammy Awards for “Invasion of Privacy.” Her biggest hits include “WAP,” “Up,” and “Bodak Yellow.”
“Insecure,” “Work in Progress,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” are among Banks’ TV credits. She has another feature besides “Assisted Living” in the works, “Young Wild Free,” a drama about a teen whose life takes an unexpected turn when he’s held at gunpoint by the girl of his dreams.
