Three Female Screenwriters Considered for Fifty Shades of Grey Adaptation

We previously reported that the producing duo from The Social Network, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti would be producing the film adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey and we hoped that this duo would do right by women this time around in both their writing and directing choices.

Now, De Luca and Brunetti are one step closer to hiring a screenwriter for the highly coveted position with four writers in the running and three of them are women.

While Bret Easton Ellis laments to his Twitter contingent about not being chosen the finalists are Karen Croner, Dan Fogelman, Veena Sud and Kelly Marcel.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Fogelman may be the most experienced writer of the bunch but has mainly written family friendly fare including Tangled and Cars.

Karen Croner, is currently working on Admission, based on a 2009 novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz which will star Tina Fey and Paul Rudd. Croner adapted Anna Quindlen’s novel One True Thing, which starred Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger and Olive Ann Burns’ novel Cold Sassy Tree for a television movie with Faye Dunaway.

Veena Sud is best known for adapting the Danish television show Forbrydelsen into AMC’s The Killing. After the end of the first season of The Killing, Sud received critical backlash and the show was canceled after its second season several weeks ago. Previously, Sud had written for Cold Case and was is said to be working on a remake of Hitchcock’s Suspicion for Paramount.

Kelly Marcel, formerly a writer for Fox’s canceled Terra Nova, wrote Saving Mr. Banks, starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, which is a behind the scenes look at how Disney’s Mary Poppins came to be made. The film is set to start production next month.
