TIFF Adds More Galas and Special Presentations: Pics from Sam Taylor-Johnson, Veena Sud, & More

"The Lie": TIFF

The Toronto International Film Festival has added more titles to its most high profile slates. Of four galas added, one is woman-directed: Veena Sud’s “The Lie.” Starring Mireille Enos, Peter Sarsgaard, and Joey King, the thriller tells the story of parents wrestling with the aftermath of their teenage daughter’s lethal mistake.

The Special Presentations lineup now includes Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of James Frey’s controversial addiction “memoir” “A Million Little Pieces,” and Naomi Kawase’s Juliette Binoche-starrer “Vision,” a drama about a French essayist who connects with a mountain man despite language barriers. Overall 22 films have been added to this category, and five are helmed by women.

TIFF also announced its Masters program, which is “comprised of … daring new films by acclaimed, established auteurs with remarkable bodies of work.” Exactly zero of the 11 titles screening are helmed by women.

The fest’s Contemporary World Cinema program includes “Bulbul Can Sing,” Rima Das’ portrait of a teen girl in India who falls in love just as tragedy strikes her best friend, and Natalia Meshchaninova’s “Core of the World,” a story about a vet who gets along better with animals then people, among other films.

Check out our post on the previously announced Galas and Special Presentations.

You can find all of the women-directed titles added to the Gala and Special Presentation programs below. For the complete Contemporary World Cinema lineup, head to TIFF’s website.

TIFF runs from September 6-16.
