If there’s one thing this year’s list of Just for Laughs Awards recipients shows, it’s that this is a big year for women in comedy. Unlike the past two years — in which one out of six awards was given to a woman — fifty percent of this year’s recipients are female.
Tiffany Haddish is this year’s Comedy Person of the Year. Following her success in last summer’s box office hit “Girls Trip,” Haddish has been unstoppable. She became the first black female stand-up comedian to host “SNL” and to host the MTV Movie Awards. Her current projects include this fall’s “Night School” with Kevin Hart, Andrea Berloff’s “The Kitchen” alongside Melissa McCarthy and Elisabeth Moss, and a new Netflix animated series, “Tuca and Bertie,” which also stars last year’s Breakout Comedy Star of the Year Ali Wong.
Hannah Gadsby’s latest Netflix stand-up special, “Nanette,” will take home this year’s Comedy Special of the Year — and for good reason. It has been praised by critics and fans alike for its no-holds-barred, self-reflexive commentary on misogyny, homophobia and gender bias, and the art of comedy itself.
Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, the showrunners behind Netflix’s female wrestling dramedy “GLOW,” will receive Comedy Writers of the Year. Their 1980s ensemble series, which features Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin — alongside many other very talented women — received multiple award nominations for its first season, including a Golden Globe nod for Brie’s performance. Its second season recently dropped on Netflix.
Montreal’s Just for Laughs is the largest international comedy festival in the world. This year’s festival will run between July 11 and July 29. Awards will be presented on the 27th.
