The Toronto International Film Festival has started unrolling its 2019 lineup. The fest’s Galas slate is composed of 18 titles, nine of which are directed or co-directed by women — a record number for the fest’s most prestigious program.

The strand includes the world premieres of Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet Tubman biopic, “Harriet,” as well as Marjane Satrapi’s Marie Curie biopic, “Radioactive.” Also set to screen for the first time are Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers,” the story of former strip club employees who con their Wall Street clients, and Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a look inside a journalist’s life-changing friendship with Mister Rogers. Sundance winner “Clemency” is part of the slate. Written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, the Alfre Woodard-starrer centers on a morally conflicted prison warden.

TIFF also announced its Special Presentations lineup. Of 38 features in the program, seven are directed or co-directed by women, or 18 percent. Among the titles set to screen are Coky Giedroyc’s adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s “How to Build a Girl,” a comedy about a young music journalist played by “Booksmart’s” Beanie Feldstein, and Cannes winner “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” Céline Sciamma’s drama depicting the relationship between an artist and the woman whose portrait she’s commissioned to paint.

TIFF typically adds titles to both of these slates in the weeks leading up to the festival. In last year’s initial announcement, 29 percent of the Gala lineup was women-directed, and 27 percent of the Special Presentations were helmed by women.
