Tilda Swinton Scores Two Wins for We Need to Talk About Kevin

Tilda Swinton got a much needed awards boost with two wins in the last couple of days. She was named best actress by both the National Board of Review and at the European Film Awards. She needs to get some serious traction to get into the final five for the Oscars. This helps a bit.

We Need to Talk About Kevin also made it onto the list of top ten independent films from the NBR. Pariah — written and directed — by Dee Rees also won the freedm of expression award.

In a bit of an upset, Susanne Bier won best director for In a Better World at the European Film Awards.

Swinton was also featured in the New York Times Magazine this weekend. Here’s a quote about the film:

Question: In your new film, “We Need To Talk About Kevin,” we watch you raise a future mass murderer. It’s an amazing piece of birth control.

Answer: It’s a fantasy that has as much to do with the practical business of bringing up a child as “Rosemary’s Baby” has to do with being pregnant. Still, there’s always going to be a moment in a pregnancy when you wonder whether the devil was involved.
